Mahershala Ali has confirmed he is officially done with Marvel Studios’ long-delayed Blade reboot. Speaking during promotional interviews at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the two-time Academy Award winner emphasized that he has completely moved on from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project.
Despite a notoriously turbulent seven-year development cycle that ultimately saw the film stall, the actor expressed striking goodwill toward the comic book studio. Ali revealed that Marvel Studios significantly helped fund his newly debuted action thriller, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, while providing resources for over a year of intensive physical preparation that he was ultimately able to reallocate to his new film.
Looking past development setbacks
The cinematic history of the Blade reboot has been a prominent talking point in Hollywood since Mahershala Ali was first announced in the titular role at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. In the years that followed, the production cycled through a series of script rewrites, shifting release dates, and departing directors. Marvel eventually removed the project from its upcoming theatrical slate entirely.
When asked directly by reporters if the vampire-hunter film was entirely behind him, Ali was unambiguous.
"I'm done," Ali stated to Variety during festival coverage. "I'm doing this and anything else moving forward. So like, yeah—I'm over that. I'm done with that."
The finality of his departure follows earlier comments made during the summer, where the actor noted that if the studio had collectively chosen to push the project through, production would have commenced long ago. Ali pointed out that he had remained under contract for an extended period while the studio possessed the financial capital to execute the project. However, the actor clarified that those unresolved questions now rest firmly with Marvel executives rather than himself.
An unexpected partnership yields results
Though the superhero venture collapsed, the creative framework built during its preparation directly birthed Ali's latest project. Filmmaker Bassam Tariq, who was initially hired by Marvel Studios to direct Blade in 2021 before exiting a year later amid scheduling and production shifts, reteamed with Ali for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.
The independent action thriller made its world premiere at TIFF on Saturday night ahead of its scheduled theatrical release on September 25, 2026. The film follows Latif, played by Ali, a devoutly religious contract killer forced onto the run to protect his young children following the sudden death of his wife. Notably, the gritty, realistic thriller heavily features Ali utilizing sword combat to fend off antagonists.
The physical skills displayed on screen were a direct byproduct of the training Ali undertook while under Marvel's employment. The actor spent more than 12 months undergoing specialized weapons and tactical training specifically tailored to portray the iconic Marvel daywalker.
A "wonderful contribution" to independent cinema
Rather than harboring resentment over years spent in development gridlock, Ali voiced appreciation for how Marvel handled the transition. The studio effectively subsidized the preparation and foundational elements that allowed the independent feature to be made.
"For a year, yeah. It was a little more than a year," Ali said regarding his Blade training timeline. "And you know, I'm actually... I'm really grateful like—they helped pay for our movie so thank you. Like really, like we couldn't have afforded to—there's no way we coulda did this film and I got to go train for a year. So at this point, I'm so grateful that they made a wonderful contribution to our film."
Bassam Tariq has similarly echoed this perspective, noting that his time spent dealing with large-scale studio planning altered how he approached filmmaking. The creative kinship formed between the director and lead actor during their stint in the MCU pipeline allowed them to pivot quickly into a narrative they found personally and culturally resonant. Early critical reception for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother out of the festival circuit has been overwhelmingly positive, with reviewers praising the distinct blending of high-intensity action with deeply emotional familial drama.
What happens next
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has previously expressed personal disappointment regarding the studio's inability to launch the Blade reboot during Ali's tenure. While the character remains part of Marvel's broader intellectual property catalogue, any future live-action adaptation will require a complete creative reset and the casting of a new lead actor.
For Ali, the chapter is resolutely closed as his focus shifts entirely toward the autumn festival circuit and the commercial rollout of his new feature. Driven by a desire to bring physical, auteur-driven action to the screen, the actor indicated he is looking forward to exploring original properties rather than revisiting stalled comic book adaptations.
